" Ievan Polkka ou Ievan Polokka, (« La polka d'Eva » en finnois ou en dialecte savo) est une chanson populaire finlandaise écrite en savo par Eino Kettunen dans les années 1930. Le nom « Ievan Polkka » est souvent mal orthographié « Levan Poolkka », dû à la similitude du L minuscule et du i majuscule. [ ... ] La chanson est en savo, un dialecte de l'est de la Finlande. L'intermezzo, utilisé dans l'animation Flash décrite plus bas en est juste phonétiquement inspiré avec quelque mots en finnois. Il ne s'agit pas de la chanson originale de Eino Kettunen, mais plutôt de la reprise faite par Loituma. Le texte de quelques vers de l'intermezzo varie d'une interprétation à l'autre. Il s'agit en fait de scat ou de yaourt comme utilisé en jazz. [ ... ] La chanson est très connue depuis sa reprise a cappella par le groupe Loituma dans leur premier album Loituma en 1995, puis dans leur deuxième Things of Beauty (kuutamolla) en 1998. "Vajas (Echo) represents a synergy of arctic voices and sound: (i) the traditional Saami yoiks of Ánde Somby emanating from the distant tundra; (ii) the entrancing violin stylings and melodic voice of Kristin Mellem; and (iii) the renowned and captivating synthesizer sound voyages and creations of Nils Johansen.
All three accomplished musicians call the arctic city of Tromsø, northern Norway home. Ánde Somby besides being a famous Saami traditional yoiker is also a well known legal scholar and Indigenous rights activist. Kristen Mellem is a classically trained violinist and composer who currently works with folk music, yoiking and community theatre. Nils Johansen is a contemporary musician and composer and was the music mastermind of the internationally celebrated group Bel Canto.
Vajas’ fingerprint is the meeting of the cold arctic breeze and human warmth, the traditional Saami yoik combined with spheric sound travels."

Karen Dalton, It Hurts Me Too
Karen Dalton: " Karen Dalton (1938-1993) était une artiste américaine, aux origines mi-irlandaise, mi-cherokee. Chanteuse de folk et de blues, guitariste talentueuse (elle utilisait une Gibson 12 cordes) et joueuse de banjo (le sien était particulièrement impressionnant puisqu'il comportait pas moins de 27 frettes), elle évolua sur la scène du Greenwich Village au début des années 1960, en particulier avec Fred Neil, Tim Hardin, Bob Dylan ou encore les Holy Modal Rounders. Son timbre de voix, particulièrement bluesy, est souvent comparé à celui de la chanteuse de jazz Billie Holiday. La publicité du label Capitol pour son premier album (It's So Hard To Tell Who's Going To Love You The Best, produit par Nick Venet) le décrivait d'ailleurs comme "the folksinger's answer to Billie Holiday" (littéralement, "la réponse de la chanteuse de folk à Billie Holiday"). L'effroi que suscitait sur elle les studios d'enregistrement ainsi que sa claustrophobie firent qu'elle n'enregistra son premier album qu'en 1969. Karen n'était pas une compositrice mais elle faisait de chaque chanson qu'elle reprenait la sienne. Sur ses deux albums, elle reprit des chansons de Paul Butterfield, Richard Manuel, Dino Valenti, Fred Neil, Tim Hardin, Leadbelly, Jelly Roll Morton, George Jones, Richard Tucker aussi bien que des versions personnelles de folk traditionnels. Elle lutta avec les drogues et l'alcool pendant de nombreuses années et décéda en 1993, à Bearsville, New-York, là où elle avait passé une grand partie de sa vie. C'est dans cette ville que son second album, In my own time, fut enregistré et produit par Harvey Brooks. Les notes du livret furent écrites par Fred Neil, qui, le premier, attira l'attention du producteur Nick Venet de Capitol sur la jeune fille, sur le label Sunshine de Michael Lang, le promoteur de Woodstock: « Karen a été ma chanteuse préférée aussi bien qu'une forte influence sur ma propre façon de chanter depuis le début des années soixante. Je l'ai repérée pour la première fois dans le Village au "Cock & Bull" (rebaptisée plus tard le "Bitter End"). Sa voix me saisit immédiatement. Elle interpréta "Blues on the Ceiling" (qui est ma chanson) avec tellement d'inspiration que si elle m'avait dit qu'elle l'avait écrite elle-même, je l'aurais cru. Après le set, Dino Valenti m'a emmené chez Karen. Plus tard dans la nuit, nous avons jammé. (...) Sa voix était si unique. Pour la décrire, il faudrait être un poète. Tout ce que je peux dire, c'est quelle se démerde sacrément bien pour chanter du blues... » « Karen has been my favorite female vocalist as well as a heavy influence on my own style of singing since the early sixties. I first picked up on her one night in the village at the "Cock & Bull" (later the Bitter End). Her voice grabbed me immediately. She did "Blues On The Ceiling" (which is my song) with so much feeling that if she told me she had written it herself I would have believed her. After the set Dino Valenti took me up to Karen's place. Later that night we jammed. Karen was like a letter from home. Her voice is so unique, to describe it would take a poet. DakhaBrakha means “give/take” in Ukrainian.
DakhaBrakha are a Ukranian quintet who play Ukranian folk music with a contemporary twist. All five sing together to create stirring melodies and as well as traditional Ukrainian/Russian instruments such as the cello and Russian treschotki, they also play instruments you would not readily associate with a folk band from Eastern Europe such as Indian tablas, buddhistic gong and maracas. As such their sound combines Eastern European folk sensibilties and melodies with rhythms from Africa and Asia.
DakhaBrakha were formed in 2004 at the Centre of Contemporary Art in Kiev - “DAKH” – by avant-garde theater director and cultural savant Vladyslav Troitsky.
Vlad felt that Ukrainian folk music would benefit from the overtones of another music, cultures and styles and so he brought together some of the finest musicians he knew. Experimenting with Ukranian folk music they introduced other rhythms from around the world to create the intense, moving and melancholic sound that is DakhaBrakha.
As well as performing gigs as a band in their own right they are also the 'house' band for the Dakh Theatre company. Dakh Theatre is known throughout Europe as one of the leading production houses of avant-garde theatre combining live music from DakhaBrakha with theatre and dance to create some intense productions. Their series of Shakespeare interpretations has brought them to many of Europe's leading venues including London's Barbican in January 2007. As well as many festivals and theatres in the Ukraine, DakhaBrakha have also performed in the UK (London), Germany, France (Cannes), Russia (Moscow), Georgia, Poland, Hungary (Budapest) and Poland."
